We all know the feeling. Opening the door to head out to work and coming face-to-face (literally) with the perfect mix of fluffy snow and deadly ice. While the winter weather may be fun for the kiddos, unexpectedly slipping on ice loses its magic with age and height!
So, how do you rid your driveway, sidewalks and steps of thick, snow-covered ice? While there’s no one “right” way to do it, we’ve discovered a great process to follow to ensure proper ice removal.
Be Prepared
- Stay informed about weather patterns and incoming storms. The best action you can take against ice is prevention, so spreading sand, kitty litter, salt or de-icer prior to inclement weather will save you a lot of work in the morning.
Clear off excess snow
- Start with a shovel or snow blower, making sure to clear the surface of the ice of any accumulated snow. De-icers will only cut through so much snow and ice before their effects wear off, so getting rid of the snowpack firsts will allow the chemicals to target the real issue.
Apply De-Icer
- Apply de-icer or salt in a thin, even layer. No need to go overboard, just make sure to sprinkle or spray an even amount over your surfaces. And don’t forget to wear gloves!
Be Safe
- Remember to practice caution when using de-icers. Keep the chemicals clear of your lawn and landscaping, as de-icer can have lasting effects on your yard if disposed of improperly. When the weather warms up, you can protect your yard by rinsing the driveway, aiming the water flow into the street and away from your landscaping. If you have pets or small children, it is also important to keep them away from the ice melt. Make sure to wipe off paws when you come inside too!
Less is more
- Though applying more de-icer will definitely work fast, use moderation when deploying chemical de-icers on your driveway as it can damage the surface. Take care with concrete that is less than one year old, especially, as it is particularly vulnerable to wear.
